It’s New! A brand new national level motocross series for West Coast ATV Racers!
Rounds one and two kicked off with a bang as many of the nation’s top professional ATV motocross racers, including one KTM rider from England, and several dozen amateur racers readied for battle at the starting gate of the Mesquite MX Park in Southern Nevada. This would be the site for rounds 1 and 2, which launched December 12th and 13th.
The series is the brainchild of veteran race promoter Sean Reddish, who also runs the WORCS off-road series. Sean has made this new motocross series unique in that it combines two rounds over one full weekend at the same track. It’s a great idea considering it cuts travel expenses for the racers in half, a big plus during these tough economic times. “You double your pleasure, fun and riding time for what it usually costs to travel to one round of racing,” claims fifty-three year old Rick Ellsworth of Parker, Arizona. Rick competes in two different classes, including a class for racers over 50 years of age. This requires him to compete in eight separate motos during the weekend. “I got lots of track time and had a lot of fun. It’s what really makes this series unique and worthwhile, but for a lot less cost. I’ll definitely be back for the next two rounds,” says Ellsworth.
There’s literally a class for anyone who likes to ride ATVs, whether you be a beginner, novice or pro; or age four and up. The WAMCS has adopted an AMA class schedule, which includes twenty different adult classes and fifteen separate youth classes to choose from.
We caught up with a few pro racers during the weekend, all of which had different reasons for racing and welcomed this new series to the west coast. “It’s a good warm up race for my WORCS racing. I can give my motocross skills a little boost. This year I want to come out of the gate a little harder and I can use this to my advantage,” says former WORCS series champion and Can-Am factory pro Josh Frederick.
Yamaha YFZ450R racer Dustin Nelson also put up a good show, although he had a little mechanical trouble on Saturday and has also changed up a few of his sponsors. For 2010 he’s adjusting to racing with a different exhaust, aluminum components, suspension, a different engine setup and a new tire and wheel package. Dustin was also very optimistic about the growth of the new series. “I think that it’s cool and I hope it builds more momentum, and more people come out. This is fun! I think that by the time the series gets to Glen Helen, and especially by the time we get to the last [scheduled] round at Cahuilla, there will be big shows. Arizona has good quad turnouts too,” said Nelson.
The series goes to Glen Helen for rounds three and four on December 2nd and 3rd, and then heads from there to Arizona’s newest and only natural terrain motocross track at Grinding Stone Sports Park. Check out our extensive photo gallery from rounds one and two by clicking on the image to the right.
